Return to the past as you visit two floors of exhibits in the new Garrett County Transportation Museum. The first floor features carriages, sleighs, buggies, fire department artifacts and automobiles, along with a representation of A.D. Naylor’s Blacksmith Shop, one of the earliest and most prominent businesses in Oakland.  The second floor called the Deep Creek Gallery, hosts a variety of exhibits documenting the history of Deep Creek Lake and nearby Maryland State Parks of Herrington Manor, Swallow Falls, New Germany and Deep Creek. The Garrett County Historical Society combines many facets of Garrett County History into three museums with wide-ranging displays and presentations. The Garrett County Historical Museum features a variety of artifacts that will take you through generations of Garrett County History, the Grantsville Community Museum tells the compelling story of Grantsville and Western Maryland through their collection of photographs and artifacts donated by the community. A generous donation from the Howard and Audrey Naylor Family Trust Foundation enabled construction of the new Garrett County Museum of Transportation.   website

There are three museums in downtown Oakland: The Garrett County Historical Society Museum. The newly finished Garrett County Transportation Museum and the upcoming Oakland B&O Train Station Museum.  The Historical Socity Museum was established in 1969 and relocated in 1997.  It is made up of eight themed rooms that take visitors from the time period of living in the wilderness into a time of commerce and growth.  The Transportation Museum  was completed in 2011 on Liberty Street in downtown Oakland. It is a two story building consisting of full sized antique modes of transportation and the largest display of Buddy L
Model T Fords in Western Maryland. The second floor displays boats, the first snow mobile in Garrett County and it exhibits the history of nearby Maryland State Parks.  more info
